Victor Wembanyama sends strong message after Spurs reach NBA Finals

Victor Wembanyama made it clear that the San Antonio Spurs are not satisfied with simply reaching the NBA Finals.

After leading the Spurs to an 111-103 Game 7 victory over the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, the 22-year-old superstar delivered a strong message about the team’s mindset as San Antonio secured its first Finals appearance since 2014.

The Spurs completed an impressive comeback after trailing 3-2 in the Western Conference Finals, winning consecutive elimination games against the top-seeded Thunder. While the stat line was not his most dominant of the postseason, his impact was felt on both ends of the floor. The French star anchored the defense and controlled critical stretches as the Spurs pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Wembanyama was named Western Conference Finals MVP after averaging 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.7 blocks and 1.4 steals during the series.

“They don’t even know how much I love them,” Wembanyama said of his teammates. “They’re just incredible. Everybody stepped up tonight. We know everybody got each other’s back. I love these guys.”

Team success driving Spurs’ and Victor Wembanyama’s rise

Perhaps the most telling quote came when Wembanyama was asked about winning the Western Conference Finals MVP award.

“This doesn’t mean anything, but the fact that we’re a team,” he said. “We got that together, and it means for all of us and for all the fans right here.”

That response reflects what has separated San Antonio throughout the playoffs. Seven Spurs players scored in double figures in Game 7, highlighting the depth that has supported Wembanyama’s superstar production. Julian Champagnie added 20 points, while De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and others made key contributions.

The Spurs’ rise is not solely about Wembanyama’s brilliance. Their balanced roster, defensive discipline, and ability to execute under pressure have accelerated their timeline. Coach Mitch Johnson has built a group that complements its franchise centerpiece rather than relying entirely on him.

Now the challenge shifts to the New York Knicks. With home-court advantage and a confident young core, the Spurs are four wins away from completing one of the league’s fastest championship ascents.
