Marta Kostyuk’s stellar season continues, defeats Iga Swiatek at French Open

Even though Iga Swiatek was undefeated against Marta Kostyuk, no one took it as a given that she would get her fourth career win over her at this year’s French Open.

In a tennis tournament laden with drama and upsets, Kostyuk avenged those losses, including a Round of 16 straight set defeat at Roland Garros five years ago. She defeated Swiatek, whose 25th birthday was soured by the loss, 7-5, 6-1. Swiatek’s chances to to get to the semifinals or finals were perceived to be greatly improved when Jelena Ostapenko, whom she has never beaten, and Elena Rybakina lost earlier in the week.

Kostyuk won the Mutua Madrid Open and has played her career best tennis in 2026. A Top 10 ranking is within her grasp as she is 13th in the WTA live rankings.

A relaxed and healthy Kostyuk is feeling good

Kostyuk was spotted dancing in the break between sets in the Swiatek match. That is indicative of her relaxed nature on the court. She goes with the flow, doesn’t overthink it, and wins.

In the French Open quarterfinals on Tuesday, she will meet the winner of the Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic match.

She is a dangerous player when playing at this level and capable of beating anyone left in the draw.

Maiden Roland Garros champions will be crowned

Swiatek was the last player in either the men’s or women’s singles draw that won Roland Garros before.

The ladies draw still has Grand Slam champions in the draw including Aryna Sabalenka, Madison Keys, and Naomi Osaka, but Sabalenka and Osaka play each other next, so there could be two or less going into the quarterfinals.
