Kentucky baseball is looking to avoid history repeating itself

Just a year ago, the Kentucky Wildcats baseball team was poised to knock of the West Virginia Mountaineers in the NCAA Tournament Regionals. The offense came through, and they led 12-7 going into the bottom of the eighth inning. Then disaster struck. The Cats gave up six runs in that inning and they lost 13-12 ending their season.

Fast forward almost exactly one year, and it's on the verge of happening again. On Sunday, Kentucky faces West Virginia again in the Regionals, and a win would put the Wildcats into the Super Regionals. They led 9-6 going into the top of the ninth, when, once again, the wheels fell off. The Kentucky bullpen surrendered five runs, leading to an 11-9 loss. Now, they'll square off one more time with advancement in the NCAA Tournament on the line.

Monday night will be a third and final matchup between Kentucky and West Virginia, and the Wildcats will try to avoid having their season ended by the Mountaineers once again. Based on history, the offenses will produce, and whichever team can get quality pitching, especially from the bullpen, will win it.

Kentucky ace Jaxon Jelkin is likely to take the mound for the Cats. He's 8-3 on the season with a 3.91 ERA. Holding onto leads has been a struggle for Kentucky all season, though.

Offensively, the Wildcats have been terrific. Luke Lawrence, Jayce Tharnish, and Tyler Bell have consistently produced big at bats in this postseason, and will be counted on again.

The game will be played at 6:00 P.M. ET on Monday night. Can Kentucky get it done and avoid a repeat of history? We'll be watching.
