Detroit Lions 2026 draft pick out for season with torn ACL

The Detroit Lions have been no strangers to injury issues in recent years and the same problem is creeping up again early in 2026.

According to head coach Dan Campbell, 2026 fifth-round pick and wide receiver Kendrick Law suffered a torn ACL at practice on Tuesday.

That means Law will miss the entire 2026 campaign.

“Dan Campbell said rookie WR Kendrick Law tore his ACL at practice on Tuesday,” Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com wrote.

Law was selected with the No. 168 overall pick in April.

Before joining the Lions, Law played his college ball at both Alabama and Kentucky.

In four years at college, including three at Alabama, he tallied 86 receptions for 883 yards and four touchdowns.

Law saved his best collegiate season for last when he posted career-highs in receptions (53), receiving yards (540) and touchdowns (three) at Kentucky.

What Law’s injury means for Lions

While this is obviously a very disappointing turn of events, it doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things for Detroit.

The Lions have a very good top three at wide receiver in Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Isaac TeSlaa.

Because of that trio, Law wouldn’t have been anything more than a No. 4 wide receiver in the Lions’ offense.

With Law out of the mix, guys like Greg Dortch, Cedrick Wilson, Jackson Meeks, Tom Kennedy, Malik Cunningham and Dominic Lovett are left to battle for depth roles.

Lions’ bad luck with injuries

The Lions have been one of the most injured teams in the NFL in recent years.

Last year alone, safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, cornerback Terrion Arnold and tight end Sam LaPorta all came down with significant injuries.

Defensive lineman Alim McNeill also missed nearly half the season as he worked his way back from a torn ACL suffered during the 2024 campaign, which was another injury-plagued year for the Lions that saw star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson suffer a fractured fibula.

In 2024, the Lions ranked 25th in Adjusted Games Lost due to injury. That means only seven teams in the NFL were impacted by injuries more than Detroit was.

In 2025, things were even worse, with the Lions ranking 31st in the same metric.

Detroit finished with a 130.3 AGL mark, which was up nearly 34 points from the year prior.

Safe to say, Law’s injury is an ominous sign for the Lions’ hopes of getting over the hump when it comes to injuries.
