On Monday, Texas took the field again after a brief hiatus for summer workouts. The next month or so, the Longhorns will begin the true homestretch toward a true “title or bust” season. Summer workouts, while not headline catching, can be a massively important time. It’s a moment where teams can come together and build the connection needed to make a run at a title.
For Texas, there are five players that I believe could use the next few months to assert themselves as leaders on and off-the-field.

OL Laurence Seymore
The all-important OL portal addition is officially on campus and working out with the team. There is no question why Seymore was brought it. He is meant to be the starter at left guard, filling out the starting five for Texas up front. He needs to develop a chemistry with the other starters, gain comfort in the offensive system and become another leader for the offense. Seymore’s addition could prove to be as important as any other this offseason if he utilizes this summer effectively.
WR Sterling Berkhalter
Since spring camp, there have been many reports of Texas players working out together. Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, Arch Manning and others have gotten together consistently to sharpen the connection. Each time, it seems Berkhalter is right there as well. I believe Berkhalter is a very important player, simply because of his experience compared to the other depth WRs. He enters this season with more catches and yards than every other depth WR combined. That can be valuable on-the-field of course, but off-the field as well. He has a chance this summer to not only earn more snaps but make the rest of the WR unit stronger as well as a leader.

LB Darius Snow
The LB position continues to be the one I have the most questions around heading into the season. It seems Rasheem Biles and Ty’Anthony Smith are set as the starters, but what does the depth look like? Is it Justin Cryer and Brad Spence leading the way or do they want to lean on the late portal addition? Snow was brought in at the 11th hour, adding a seventh year veteran to a youthful room. This summer, Snow could step up as a leader and help the LB unit become a true strength this season. On top of that, he can help the talented freshmen LBs develop faster throughout these months.
DB Derek Williams Jr.
I could argue this is the most important player on the team over the next month. Since his injury in 2024, Derek Williams Jr. hasn’t had a real chance to slow down. It was all about the rehab until fall camp last season. Then, it was about getting back to game speed and confidence. Then, Will Muschamp is hired and he’s thrown into learning a new defense. Now, it’s a chance to go out there and just play football. No concern about physical limitations or figuring out a system. It’s just building more confidence in his ability. That’s a very valuable thing and could give Texas a remarkable safety duo in McDonald and Williams Jr. this season.

DL Justus Terry
This seems to be the somewhat forgotten player on the Texas defense. He suffered an injury to his shoulder and missed much of spring camp, but he’s back on the field now. I believe he could answer multiple questions for this Texas defense. The versatility Terry can bring to the defensive line can be season changing. He could line up as a true edge defender, across from Colin Simmons or Lance Jackson on early downs. Then, he slides inside for long 3rd downs, giving Texas an insanely dangerous pass rush unit. That’s a chess piece that can change games and the path to that level of impact starts this summer.
