Chelsea’s plan for Liam Delap is obvious as Blues plot to make their £30m back

Chelsea should try and find Liam Delap a Premier League loan – but that may be easier said than done at this stage.

Cerys Jones has written up a piece for the Athletic today about the Premier League players who most need a transfer, and it’s no surprise to see Liam Delap in there.

After one of the most painfully poor debut seasons we can remember from a Chelsea player, the £30m signing already looks like a lost cause, and if the club could turn back time there is no doubt they would undo that move.

Instead, they need to look forward.

“It is difficult to see Delap displacing Joao Pedro as Chelsea’s starting No 9 anytime soon,” Jones writes. You can say that again.

“It leaves Delap in a difficult spot: he has not shown the versatility to play in any other forward positions, and will face further competition for minutes when Emanuel Emegha arrives from Strasbourg this summer… with no European competition for Chelsea next season, it is hard to see where he finds minutes. A loan to another Premier League side might be the solution.”

Delap is a lost cause – Chelsea just want their money back

A loan for Delap would be ideal, although in this case we’re expecting it to be just so he can score some goals and find some form so that Chelsea can try to earn the money back that they paid for him.

In other news…

Ibrahima Konate is being linked with a number of teams ahead of a potential summer transfer – but he won’t be joining Chelsea it seems.

Tyrique George could be on the move this summer, with Everton currently deciding whether to sign him permanently from Chelsea for a fee around £22m.
